Room 116 Notes 12-8

Evening Parents

Great show by the Ann Arbor Youth Choir today.  Three of our wonderful students and many other Wines Community members performed.  Thanks for inviting me!

2 weeks until the break. Pen Pal letters arrive tomorrow so we will be working on writing our responses to those letters as well as editing our Personal  Narratives in writing workshop this week.

In science we will be finishing up Nature's Recyclers Unit with a quiz this week.  Look for information on that in kid planners.  In Social Studies we our continuing our look at the Northeast region of The U.S.  Reading groups and Reading responses make up the bulk of reading workshop for the next two weeks.
In word study we will focus on homophones.

Let me know if you would like to work math groups on Thursday.

    Room 116 Notes 11-10

    Hi all

November is here and 2 1/2 weeks until the Thanksgiving break. Time is flying by and before we know it, we will be skating at Yost celebrating the holiday break:)

Speaking of field trips.  We are off to The Downtown Library this Friday.  We will arrive by bus around 9:45 and should hit the stage in the basement around 10.  All three 4th grade classrooms will be performing their Joe Reilly collaborative songs, followed by some storytelling and book talks, courtesy the wonderful library staff.  Come join us and enjoy some great songs.

In Language Arts we are continuing work on Personal Narratives, working in our reading groups and beginning g the second round of Michigan Pen Pal letters.

We've been alternating Social Studies and Science on a weekly basis and this week we will become Mold Farmers.  After that we will continue our tour of the Northeast region of The United States.

Math tests come back tonight.  Please Correct, Sign and Return by Wednesday.

BYOT - ok, the popular phrase being used by my colleagues is "Just gonna try and get me toe in the water", when it come to the discussion about students bringing their own technology into the classroom.  I would like to get something started and this would be my approach to the process.  I would like to invite folks to have their children feel free to bring their iPads or laptops in this week.  This would be a trial run designed to introduce the routine and expectations around this process.  My intent is to get into a routine where these technologies would be used by groups of kids for either word study or math.
Lets work on expectations and organization this week and then I will be more explicit about the how and when their technology would be used.  Let me know if you have any questions.

Have a great week.  Below is this week's math schedule.  Thanks.
    Nick

Math - Not sure if math groups are scheduled for this week.  If it doesn't happen, the schedule could change a bit, but we will cover the first 4 lessons of Unit 4, for sure.

Science-we are starting our unit on Nature's Recyclers this week.  Should get our worm bin this week.  Look for a parent letter.

Social Studies- we started our unit on the different social sciences that go into the discussion of social studies.  This is a part of our year long look at the 5 USA regions.  We got our login info for the TCI website and started reading and responding to text.

Reading - we started reading, and writing about our reading, in our reading response journals.

Writing - we will begin talking about the writing genre of personal narratives this week which will eventually lead us to writing our own narratives.

Word Study - first week of word study went well.  Kids mostly worked on words they misspelled from our "Spelling Demons" tests.  We will also begin a daily language piece that works on grammar.

    FIELD TRIPS

Island Lake Huron River trip with Leslie Science Center - this trip is taking shape and it looks like we will taking a bus to the river on Wednesday, September 24.  If this time/date sticks, and you are interested in visiting with us, we will be on the river from 9:15 to 1:45 that day.  Kids will need to bring cold lunches that day for our mid trip picnic. Think good weather:)

Thursday, September 25 we are going with our Middleton buddies on a walk to Byrd Hills from 9 to 10:25.  Come with us if you are interested.  We started buddies this week and it looks like a great match.

Kerrytown / Community trip with our buddies.  It looks like we will go on either October 8 or 15 to Kerrytown with our buddies.  Stay tuned on this one, as dates and times with lock up soon.  We visit Community High School after a walk through The Farmer's Market.  This is a great trip!  Come join.

Ok, that's all for now.  Let me know if you have any questions.
    Thanks
